A recent glitch in Google Search’s AI-powered feature, AI Overviews, reportedly caused unusual responses when users searched certain action-related words such as “disregard” and “stop.” Instead of displaying normal search information or definitions, the AI system reportedly treated these words as commands and returned incomplete or blank responses.
The issue surfaced over the weekend, just days after Google introduced its upgraded AI-focused Search experience. According to reports, users searching for words like “disregard,” “ignore,” “quit,” “look,” “forget,” and “stop” were shown strange AI-generated replies instead of regular search summaries.
One of the most noticeable examples appeared when users searched for the word “disregard.” The AI Overview reportedly responded with, “Understood. Let me know whenever you have a new prompt or question.” After the message, users reportedly encountered a large blank space before reaching the actual search results.
The glitch appeared across multiple devices and platforms, creating confusion among users on social media. AI Overviews is designed to provide quick and useful information directly below the Search bar, powered by Google’s Gemini AI system. However, in these cases, the feature reportedly interpreted normal search terms as direct chatbot instructions.
Reports suggest the issue may have been linked to edge cases within the system’s code that were not detected earlier. Some speculation also pointed toward the redesigned Search experience and AI updates introduced recently, although no official confirmation was provided regarding the exact cause.
A Google spokesperson acknowledged the issue and said, “We’re aware that AI Overviews are misinterpreting some action-related queries, and we’re working on a fix, which will roll out soon.”
The company has reportedly resolved the problem, and users searching those keywords are now seeing normal results without the earlier blank spaces or incorrect responses.
The incident highlights some of the challenges technology companies continue to face while integrating conversational AI features into traditional search experiences.
