India’s growing interest in artificial intelligence is now showing strongly in AI-powered image generation. Sam Altman recently highlighted the country’s rapid adoption of ChatGPT Images 2.0, revealing that users in India have already created more than 1 billion images using the tool.

Altman shared the update on X, writing, “ChatGPT Images 2.0 loves India. Already more than 1 billion images created there; awesome to see.”

The milestone reflects how quickly AI image tools are becoming part of daily digital activity in India. Users are increasingly creating portraits, social media visuals, creative edits, business graphics and design concepts using AI. For many young users, AI-generated visuals are becoming as common as using photo filters.

India is already among the fastest-growing markets for AI applications, and ChatGPT Images 2.0 appears to be gaining strong traction across different user groups. College students are creating avatars, while startups and small businesses are experimenting with posters, branding and marketing creatives.

The figure is also significant for OpenAI, as it suggests users are moving beyond casual experimentation and using AI tools regularly for content creation, design drafts and visual ideas.

OpenAI has described ChatGPT Images 2.0 as a major advancement in AI visual generation. The company said the model “can take on complex visual tasks and produce precise, immediately usable visuals, with sharper editing, richer layouts, and thinking-level intelligence.”

The upgraded model reportedly offers improved text rendering, multilingual support and better visual reasoning, helping it understand prompts more accurately and generate closer results.

Users can create different styles including:

  • Headshots
  • Comics
  • 3D avatars
  • Anime

The tool also allows users to upload images for editing or use the “Describe a New Image” feature to generate visuals directly from text prompts.

OpenAI has also called it its first image model with thinking capabilities. The company stated, “When a thinking model is selected in ChatGPT, Images 2.0 can search the web for real-time information, create multiple distinct images from one prompt, and double-check its own outputs.”

For India’s creator economy, faster AI-generated visuals could significantly speed up content creation, campaigns, thumbnails and digital branding efforts.
