In a move to enhance election oversight, the Election Commission will deploy an AI-driven video analytics system to monitor polling booths across Bengal. The technology will process live feeds from webcasting cameras and immediately flag any signs of disturbance, allowing authorities to act without delay.
The system is designed to identify sensitive situations in real time, helping officials quickly locate troubled booths and send security teams. “Artificial intelligence will help identify troubled booths in real time, enabling sector teams to reach the spot within 15-20 minutes,” an EC official said.
Once an alert is triggered, micro observers will verify the footage and inform the relevant authority, including the observer, returning officer, or sector officer, based on the situation. To support this, control rooms have been established at multiple levels, including offices of returning officers, district election officers, the Chief Electoral Officer, and the EC headquarters at Nirvachan Sadan.
Each monitoring screen will display live footage from 12 booths within an assembly constituency at a time. Micro observers will continuously rotate feeds to ensure coverage of all polling stations. Additionally, observers will have access to live footage on their mobile devices for better coordination and faster response.
To ensure data security, all webcams will be linked to cloud storage, while micro SD cards will store full-day recordings locally as backup. Addressing concerns about potential camera tampering, the EC stated that sector teams equipped with technicians and spare cameras will respond immediately. “Any such incident will be acted upon promptly, and a repoll may be ordered,” the official added.
