Amid rising concerns around artificial intelligence, the US administration is considering new oversight measures that could require AI models to be reviewed before launch.
Officials said discussions are underway about a possible executive order to form an AI working group. This group would include technology leaders and government officials to evaluate oversight options, including a formal review process for new AI models. Recent meetings included executives from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.
The proposed system could resemble a framework being developed in Britain, where multiple government bodies assess whether AI models meet safety standards.
The move signals a shift from President Donald Trump’s earlier hands-off approach. Since returning to office, Trump has promoted rapid AI growth and rolled back previous regulatory requirements that asked companies to conduct safety checks on advanced models.
“We’re going to make this industry absolutely the top, because right now it’s a beautiful baby that’s born,” Trump said. “We have to grow that baby and let that baby thrive. We can’t stop it. We can’t stop it with politics. We can’t stop it with foolish rules and even stupid rules.” He added that any rules “have to be more brilliant than even the technology itself.”
However, concerns around jobs, privacy, energy use, education, and mental health have increased. A survey showed 50% of Republicans and 51% of Democrats are more concerned than excited about AI.
The policy rethink gained momentum after Anthropic introduced a powerful AI model called Mythos, capable of identifying software vulnerabilities. The company chose not to release it publicly due to risks.
Officials are also assessing whether such models could support defence and intelligence efforts. Some proposals suggest giving the government early access to new AI systems without blocking their release.
The debate remains divided, with some tech leaders warning that too much regulation could slow innovation against China. “The technology is moving extremely fast, and there are few formal procedures, but they also don’t want to overregulate,” said Dean Ball. “It’s a tricky balance.”
