Users with older Android and iOS software may soon face a new restriction when trying to access WhatsApp. The platform is reportedly testing a security measure that could require users to update their device software before they can log in.

According to a report, some Android and iOS users are seeing a new screen asking them to install the latest available operating system update before accessing WhatsApp. The screen also shows users where they can check their device’s current software version.

For affected users, checking for an update will reportedly not be optional. They will need to install the available update through their device settings before they can log back into WhatsApp.

The change is being deployed server-side, meaning users do not need to download a separate WhatsApp update. The test is currently reaching a limited number of accounts across Android and iOS. WhatsApp has not confirmed which operating system versions will be covered by the new requirement.

The move appears focused on devices running older software, with the aim of ensuring that affected phones have the latest available security fixes.

More security measures reportedly in testing

WhatsApp is also reportedly testing a warning for users who access their accounts on the web through third-party applications. The warning could appear under the Linked Devices section and ask users to switch to the official WhatsApp Web client.

The platform has not confirmed this test or said when it could become available to more users. It is also reportedly developing features including Scam Alerts and Restricted Chats.

Separately, WhatsApp is testing another change that could prevent some users from opening the app until they update their phone software. The requirement currently appears limited to a small number of Android and iOS users.

It remains unclear which software versions will be affected or when WhatsApp could expand the requirement more widely.
