WhatsApp reportedly tests AI content labels for iOS channels

WhatsApp appears to be expanding its AI transparency tools to iOS, with a new label reportedly reaching selected beta testers. The feature will allow channel admins to mark media that has been created or edited using artificial intelligence and follows a similar rollout on Android.

The feature is reportedly available to some iOS beta testers through TestFlight with version 26.34.10.70. Channel admins are expected to access the AI content label through the context menu of a channel update. Once selected and confirmed, the label will be added to the post and cannot be removed. It will be visible to everyone viewing the channel, including other admins.

The label is expected to apply to images, videos and other media created or modified using AI tools such as Meta AI, ChatGPT and Gemini. WhatsApp may also automatically detect certain AI generated media and apply the label. Admins will have the option to add it manually when sharing eligible content.

The feature could also help channel admins meet AI disclosure rules in countries where revealing AI generated media is legally required. Once enabled for an account, WhatsApp is expected to show a banner at the top of the channel interface to inform admins about the requirement.

The disclosure is designed to help followers identify AI generated or AI edited media, especially when images and videos appear realistic and could otherwise be mistaken for authentic content.

WhatsApp previously introduced the AI content label on Android and is now extending the feature to iOS. Some users on the stable iOS version could also receive the option as the rollout expands.

For now, the AI content label remains limited to a small number of iOS beta testers. A wider rollout is expected later, but WhatsApp has not confirmed which countries will require the label or when the feature will become broadly available. Users without the option will need to wait until it reaches their accounts.
