Retail giant Walmart is cutting or relocating around 1,000 corporate jobs as part of a wider restructuring of its technology and AI divisions. The move is aimed at simplifying operations, improving reporting structures and aligning teams with the company’s growing focus on artificial intelligence.
According to a May 12 memo shared by senior executives, the restructuring will help clarify ownership across departments and better match employee roles with the skills Walmart currently needs. The announcement was made by Global CTO Suresh Kumar and AI Executive Vice President Daniel Danker.
The company said it would try to place affected employees into other roles within Walmart wherever possible. The latest decision follows previous efforts to streamline operations, including the closure of smaller office hubs.
Walmart is also reshaping its AI strategy after facing challenges with multiple single-purpose AI agents that became difficult for users to manage. The company is now combining dozens of tools into 4 larger “super agents” designed for shoppers, employees, sellers, suppliers and software developers.
Daniel Danker, who recently joined Walmart from Instacart, is leading the AI transformation effort and now reports directly to CEO Doug McMillon. The reporting structure signals that AI is becoming a central part of Walmart’s long-term business planning.
Despite the latest job cuts, Doug McMillon said Walmart’s global workforce of 2.1 million employees is expected to remain largely stable over the next 3 years, even as some corporate technology roles are reduced or moved.
The restructuring is part of a broader trend of AI-led workforce changes across major companies. In July 2025, Walmart announced the removal of hundreds of jobs linked to market manager assistants and some Walmart Academy coaching positions. Earlier in May 2025, the company also confirmed 1,500 job cuts across global technology teams, U.S. ecommerce fulfilment and Walmart Connect, its advertising division.
Industry observers believe AI adoption will continue reshaping staffing patterns at large companies as some tasks become automated while new technology-focused roles emerge.
