India has introduced a new AI-driven rainfall forecasting system for Uttar Pradesh under the Mission Mausam initiative, aiming to improve weather prediction accuracy and strengthen early warning systems across the country.
The advanced forecasting technology provides highly detailed weather updates at a 1-kilometer resolution along with 10-day rainfall forecasts. Officials said the system is expected to help farmers plan crop activities more effectively and prepare better for changing monsoon conditions.
According to Minister of State (Independent Charge) Jitendra Singh, the initiative focuses on improving weather forecasting capabilities and expanding disaster preparedness measures nationwide.
The project also introduces 2 new tools designed to combine data from multiple weather monitoring sources, including radars, satellites and weather stations. These systems work together to generate more accurate and real-time weather predictions.
Officials said India’s weather monitoring infrastructure is also expanding rapidly, with nearly 50 Doppler radars already installed across the country and additional units planned in the coming years.
The upgraded forecasting network is expected to support several sectors beyond agriculture, including urban planning, disaster management and public weather services. Authorities believe the improved forecasting system will help deliver faster alerts and more reliable weather updates during extreme weather events.
Mission Mausam is part of India’s broader push to modernise weather prediction technology using AI and advanced data integration systems to improve climate resilience and public safety.
