The impact of cybercrime on businesses can extend far beyond the company directly targeted. Fraudulent payments can result in major financial losses, ransomware can disrupt operations, and data breaches can expose information belonging to customers, employees and business partners.
In Virginia, businesses reported 962 cybercrimes in 2025, resulting in $64.2 million in losses. The impact can also spread across supply chains and other organizations that rely on affected businesses.
As companies increasingly depend on digital systems for payments, communication, customer data and daily operations, cybersecurity is becoming closely linked to financial and operational resilience rather than being only an IT issue.
The growing risk has also received greater attention from the US government. In March 2026, the White House issued Executive Order 14390, calling for stronger financial and digital defenses against cybercrime. The order also called for a more coordinated effort to disrupt transnational cybercriminal networks.
Congress has also focused on the ability of smaller businesses to defend themselves against cyber threats. Lawmakers advanced the Small Business Cybersecurity Assistance Evaluation Act of 2026, reflecting wider concerns about whether smaller companies have enough resources to strengthen their cybersecurity.
The developments highlight growing concern that cyberattacks could create broader economic risks. For businesses, the threat can affect not only their own finances and operations but also customers, employees, business partners and connected organizations.
