Vietnam is stepping up efforts to strengthen its technology ecosystem, with senior leaders calling on Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics to increase investments in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and research as the country works toward becoming a regional innovation hub.
At a meeting in Hanoi on Thursday, Communist Party General Secretary and President To Lam asked Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon to expand investment in AI, semiconductors, robotics, 5G/6G, data centres and next-generation connectivity technologies.
Lam said Vietnam is moving toward a growth model based on science, technology, innovation, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, while welcoming greater investment from Qualcomm.
Amon said Qualcomm wants to develop its presence in Vietnam into the company’s 3rd-largest AI research and development hub globally. Qualcomm already operates an R&D centre in Hanoi and has worked with Vietnamese companies including Viettel and VinSmart.
Prime Minister Le Minh Hung also met Samsung Electronics CEO Roh Tae-moon on Thursday and called for the company to remain a key partner in strengthening Vietnam’s technology capabilities, expanding its industrial base and deepening integration with global value chains.
Hung highlighted Samsung’s role in Vietnam’s industrial development and exports, describing the country as one of Samsung’s most important manufacturing hubs globally.
According to the government, Samsung’s mobile phone manufacturing operations in Vietnam had generated total exports of $500 billion by the end of June since production began 17 years ago.
Samsung has invested $24 billion in Vietnam so far. Roh said the company plans to make further investments and expand training in the country. He also said Samsung is working with the government to help local companies participate more deeply in its global supply chain.
