In a major push to advance scientific innovation, the United States has announced a $5 billion initiative that will use Artificial Intelligence to solve long-standing research challenges across multiple sectors. The programme aims to accelerate discoveries in healthcare, construction, and other critical fields by combining AI with advanced computing infrastructure and government datasets.
According to an official statement, the initiative will focus on identifying the root causes of chronic diseases, speeding up drug discovery, developing longer-lasting building materials, and addressing other complex scientific problems.
Scientists participating in the programme will gain access to the Department of Energy’s supercomputers, AI capabilities, specialised datasets, and other resources required to conduct AI-driven research. Michael Kratsios, Chief Technology Adviser to US President Donald Trump, said the project will bring together expertise from 15 federal agencies, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, Defense, and Interior.
“The White House is helping bring together all of the different agencies that work on different domains to make them part of this larger effort on AI for science,” Kratsios said.
The administration also plans to change the way federal research funding is distributed by increasing support for individual scientists and AI-based research instead of universities. According to a White House report authored by Kratsios, this approach is intended to provide greater oversight over the use of federal research funds.
“Federal support for science must be politically accountable,” the report said.
The move follows ongoing efforts by the administration to reshape federal research funding. Earlier, federal courts ruled that grant funding provided by the National Institutes of Health to universities engaged in scientific and medical research could not be reduced.
Officials said the initiative will also make use of the US government’s vast data resources, including information related to chemicals, critical minerals, and patient health. These datasets will help train AI models to identify patterns, generate predictions, and answer complex scientific questions.
In support of the programme, Microsoft announced it will contribute $40 million in AI computing credits over the next 3 years.
