AI companion startup Tolan secures $30 million as demand for personal AI grows

Tolan, an AI companion platform designed to help users manage daily tasks, navigate relationships and emotions, and achieve personal goals, has raised $30 million in fresh funding. The latest round brings the startup’s total funding to double its previous amount and reportedly pushes its valuation beyond $120 million.

The funding round includes investors such as Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew. While Tolan has not disclosed its latest valuation, PitchBook estimates it at more than $268 million, with medium confidence, according to a report by Upstarts Media.

Tolan allows users to interact with a cartoon-style character through its app. The AI companion is designed to provide support, help users organise their responsibilities and guide them through everyday challenges.

The company generates revenue through tiered memberships, which are required to access all its features. Tolan has also reported annual recurring revenue in the double-digit millions.

The startup claims to have more than 250,000 active users who have exchanged over 70 million messages through the platform in the past year. According to the company, around 70% of its users are women, while 40% are parents. The app has also attracted interest from neurodivergent users seeking emotional support and help with organising daily activities.

Tolan is part of a growing market for AI companions, although competitors have faced challenges in gaining user acceptance. Friend, a wearable AI companion, received criticism over its concept and design. Character.AI, another platform in the space, reportedly filed for bankruptcy in October 2026, following the return of its founder to Google. Its remaining staff are transitioning to Disney, which acquired some of its assets.

Competition is also expanding as AI companies develop agents that can help users plan, organise and complete tasks rather than simply hold conversations. Meta, for instance, has introduced a character-based interface for its Muse AI agent and is reportedly exploring a future hardware product.

Despite its growth, Tolan faces challenges related to the risks of AI-powered emotional support. Several lawsuits against general-purpose AI companies have alleged that chatbot interactions contributed to users’ suicides. These cases highlight concerns about the safety and responsibility of AI systems that users may rely on for emotional guidance.

As Tolan expands, its ability to retain users, compete with increasingly capable AI agents and address safety concerns will be important to its continued growth.
