Highlighting evolving security concerns, A Revanth Reddy has identified drug abuse and cybercrime as the biggest challenges facing the police in Telangana. He said the nature of crime is changing rapidly, with Artificial Intelligence acting as a double-edged sword.
The Chief Minister expressed concern over rising drug use among educated youth. He said the government is working to encourage sports participation to reduce involvement in pub culture and substance abuse. “Unfortunately, some bright students are falling prey to drugs. The youth are drifting away from sports. Abandoning the playing fields is the biggest mistake committed by the youth.”
Referring to the situation in Punjab, he warned about increasing drug addiction trends and stated, “Telangana will not turn into another Punjab.” He added that youth must contribute positively to the nation and avoid destructive paths.
Speaking about sports, he recalled Hyderabad’s strong football history in the 1950s and 1960s. He mentioned an initiative where Lionel Messi was invited to inspire young players, especially from SC and ST communities. He also noted that 7 players from Hyderabad represented India in football at the 1956 Olympics, earning the city the title “Nursery of Indian Football.”
The CM also highlighted India’s underperformance in the Olympics despite a population of 1.4 billion, comparing it to South Korea, which has a population of 40 million and won over 30 medals, including 2 gold medals by a young athlete. He shared that South Korea’s sports universities have advanced infrastructure.
To boost sports development, the Telangana government is setting up the Young India Sports University with international standards through a public-private partnership model.
He added that the government supports athletes with jobs and financial rewards. Nikhat Zareen was appointed as a Group-1 officer and awarded ₹2 crore. Mohammed Siraj was appointed DSP after rules were relaxed. Deepti Jurungi was also given Group-1 status for her Paralympic achievement.
The Chief Minister congratulated winners of the police football championship, which saw participation from 34 teams across India. He also remembered B. N. Mullik for his role in strengthening intelligence systems.
