Tata Electronics probes cyber breach after alleged Apple and Tesla documents appear on dark web

Tata Electronics has confirmed that it recently detected a cybersecurity incident after security researchers reported that a ransomware group had published what it claims are sensitive company files, including documents allegedly linked to Apple and Tesla.

In a statement, Tata Electronics said, “A few weeks ago, Tata Electronics identified a cybersecurity incident on some of our systems. Our response protocols were deployed immediately, and the incident has had no impact on our operations across businesses, which remain unaffected.”

According to cybersecurity researchers, the ransomware group known as World Leaks has uploaded more than 200,000 files, totaling over 630 gigabytes of data, on the dark web. The files reportedly include component designs, material specifications, emails, event logs, and employee documents.

Researchers who reviewed the data said the archive contains several files and folders that appear to be related to Apple, including documents associated with manufacturing and material specifications. Some files reportedly carry notices stating, “This document contains proprietary and confidential information of Apple Inc.”

The leaked data is also said to contain documents allegedly linked to Tesla. Among them are files referencing a charge port controller project and documents marked “TRADE SECRET” that reportedly include engineering drawings connected to Project Highland, Tesla’s internal codename for the redesigned Model 3 sedan. Some documents reportedly include the statement, “information contained herein is deemed confidential, proprietary, and a trade secret of Tesla Inc.”

Researchers further indicated that the data set includes employee passport copies, emails, and operational logs spanning several years. The files have reportedly been accessible on the dark web since at least June 10.

Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the leaked data, and World Leaks did not immediately respond to requests for comment. India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) also did not issue an immediate response.

The incident follows a cyberattack on Tata’s Jaguar Land Rover business last year, which resulted in a 6-week production disruption.

Tata Electronics plays a significant role in India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem and currently contributes roughly one-third of Apple’s iPhone production in the country. The company also manufactures components used by Tesla, according to industry sources.

The incident highlights the growing cybersecurity risks facing global manufacturers as cybercriminal groups increasingly target supply chains and critical business operations.
