Tamil Nadu Police arrest key suspect in major Jananayagan piracy investigation

In a major breakthrough, the Tamil Nadu State Cyber Crime Wing has arrested the alleged mastermind behind the illegal leak of the unreleased film Jananayagan. The arrest was made on June 10, 2026, several months after the case was first registered.

According to an official press release, the case was filed on April 11, 2026, following a complaint from the film’s production house. The producers alleged that the movie had been copied, transmitted and shared without authorization, resulting in significant financial losses.

Investigators carried out extensive technical analysis, digital forensic examinations and intelligence-based inquiries to trace those involved. As part of the operation, 17 individuals had already been arrested. On June 10, under the supervision of Superintendent of Police M. Meenakshi from the Cyber Crime Wing Headquarters, officers arrested the prime accused along with another individual linked to the piracy network.

With these latest arrests, the total number of people taken into custody in the Jananayagan piracy case has reached 19.

Police said the main accused had been evading arrest for a considerable period. Through continuous surveillance, intelligence gathering and coordinated field operations, officers were able to locate and apprehend him.

In a separate development, authorities also arrested 2 individuals accused of recruiting Indian nationals and facilitating their travel to Cambodia, where they were allegedly forced to participate in cyber scam activities. Investigators found that the victims were lured through false promises of high-paying overseas employment opportunities.

Considering the seriousness of the offence, preventive detention proceedings under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, 1982, commonly known as the Goondas Act, have been initiated against 1 of the accused.

Director General of Police B. Bala Naga Devi urged the public not to download, stream or distribute pirated content. She also advised people to verify overseas job offers only through authorized recruitment agencies and avoid opportunities shared through WhatsApp, Telegram or unknown online contacts.

Investigations in both cases are currently ongoing.
