Kshema General Insurance has promoted Sunil Mandava to its Chief Information Officer (CIO), recognising his contributions to building and strengthening the company’s technology operations over the past 3 years.
Sunil joined Kshema in August 2023 as Chief Architect, where he established the foundation of the insurer’s technology infrastructure. He was promoted to Head of Engineering & Infrastructure in February 2025 before taking charge of the entire technology function in November 2026.
During his tenure, Sunil built a technology team of more than 200 professionals from the ground up. The team oversees engineering, testing, DevOps, infrastructure, cybersecurity, AI and data, and project management. It supports 5 business segments: Agri, Motor, Health, Fire and Surety.
Under his leadership, Kshema’s core technology platform expanded from an initial proof of concept to serving more than 2 million monthly users. The platform maintained its availability even as its user base increased by 500% within a single year. He also established the company’s cybersecurity framework from scratch, aligning it with IRDAI guidelines and the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023.
Sunil also introduced an AI Governance Forum to promote the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence. Kshema currently uses AI to identify potential fraud in agricultural insurance claims through satellite and remote-sensing data. The technology also supports developers in improving their productivity.
Additionally, he led the evaluation of 6 vendors for a new policy administration system, with his recommendation receiving approval from the CEO and board. His efforts to introduce modern Agile and DevSecOps practices also reduced development time by 25%.
In his new role, Sunil will oversee a technology budget of approximately $5 million and collaborate with leaders across Marketing, Growth, Product, Underwriting, Compliance and Actuarial functions. He will also report to board committees responsible for technology, security and AI.
Before joining Kshema, Sunil built 25 years of experience in technology leadership and operations, working with organisations including Citigroup, The Hartford, Fair Isaac, CoreLogic, Bank of America, FINRA and Salesforce.
His progression from Chief Architect to Head of Engineering & Infrastructure and now CIO reflects his contributions to Kshema’s technology growth and digital capabilities.
