Google CEO calls for bold and responsible AI leadership by US tech industry

At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has called on American technology companies to take a leadership role in shaping its future.

In a recent interview with a news platform, Pichai described AI as “the most profound technology yet,” comparing its impact to earlier innovations led by the US. He stressed the need to develop AI “boldly and responsibly so every American benefits,” highlighting the country’s history of innovation as a guiding force.

Pichai pointed to several real-world applications already transforming industries. These include faster medical research for life-saving treatments, personalised education for students, and improved emergency response systems such as wildfire tracking and disaster management. He also mentioned consumer innovations like self-driving cars, recalling his father’s first ride in one in San Francisco as “magical.”

While optimistic about AI’s potential, Pichai acknowledged key challenges. These include job displacement and the need for large-scale reskilling. He emphasised the importance of regulation and workforce training to ensure inclusive growth. “I’m optimistic. Not because I believe in technology, but because I believe in people and the sheer power of American ingenuity,” he said.

At the same time, the rapid expansion of AI is putting pressure on infrastructure. Major tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet are facing resistance over the environmental impact of new data centres, including concerns around water usage, land requirements, and energy consumption. Some projects have already been delayed or cancelled.

Meanwhile, China is exploring alternative approaches, such as underwater data centres cooled by seawater near Shanghai.

The developments highlight the growing global competition in AI, as countries and companies race to balance innovation with sustainability and responsibility.
