Sri Lanka intensifies action against cybercrime, over 600 foreign suspects held

In a strong move against digital crime networks, authorities in Sri Lanka have intensified enforcement efforts, leading to a large number of arrests linked to cybercrime activities.

Police confirmed that more than 600 foreign nationals have been arrested this year in connection with various cybercrime operations. Those detained include individuals from India, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, and other countries.

Most of the arrests were carried out in suburbs around Colombo, which are known for their residential and rental properties. Authorities have urged local residents to report details of rented accommodations to help identify suspicious activities.

Officials say the crackdown reflects a focused effort to disrupt foreign-led cybercrime groups operating within the country. Experts believe that Sri Lanka’s strong connectivity and flexible visa policies may have unintentionally made it an attractive location for such operations.

The situation highlights how global criminal networks are using digital infrastructure and cross-border access to expand illegal activities. Authorities continue to monitor and act against these threats as part of ongoing enforcement measures.
