As concerns around AI-enabled cyber threats continue to grow, Japan’s SoftBank Group has introduced a new cybersecurity solution designed to help organizations defend against security breaches powered by artificial intelligence.
The new offering, called “Patching as a Service,” will be launched in Japan through a joint venture formed in November 2025 between SoftBank’s telecom arm and OpenAI. The move further strengthens the collaboration between the 2 companies, which have been working together to develop AI system integration services for businesses across Japan.
The launch comes at a time when organizations worldwide are paying closer attention to the security risks associated with advanced AI technologies. It also follows the recent suspension of access to OpenAI rival Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for foreign nationals by the U.S. government over national security concerns.
Speaking at an enterprise client event in Tokyo, SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son said, “We want to create a system where we will be able to defend critical Japanese infrastructure.”
He further added, “We want to leverage the new weapon of OpenAI to defend, we see this as our obligation.”
SoftBank Group remains one of OpenAI’s biggest supporters, with its cumulative committed investment expected to reach $64.6 billion by the end of 2026.
According to SoftBank’s telecom business CEO Junichi Miyakawa, around 50 people are currently involved in rolling out the cybersecurity product. The workforce dedicated to the initiative is expected to grow significantly, reaching approximately 1,000 personnel in the future.
