Siemens launches AI agent to automate and accelerate industrial engineering workflows

Amid growing demand for smarter industrial systems, Siemens has introduced the Eigen Engineering Agent, an AI system designed to plan and validate automation engineering tasks in real-world operational environments.

The system uses multi-step reasoning and self-correction to perform tasks autonomously. It operates within engineering platforms, allowing it to manage workflows from initial design to final validation.

The agent can interpret project requirements, generate automation code, configure industrial systems, and refine outputs until performance targets are met. It supports tasks such as programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, human-machine interface (HMI) setup, and device configuration, while ensuring industrial standards for accuracy and reliability.

Integrated with Siemens’ Totally Integrated Automation Engineering platform, TIA Portal, the system can access project-specific data such as system structures and component relationships. This enables it to work with existing configurations, including legacy or undocumented setups, and produce outputs aligned with established engineering standards.

The workflow breaks down complex engineering problems into steps, processes them sequentially, and evaluates results against defined requirements. It continues refining outputs until they meet the required criteria before presenting them for human review.

Industry data highlights a shortage of up to 7 million manufacturing workers by 2030, with around 1 in 5 engineering roles currently unfilled in some sectors. Siemens said the system can complete tasks 2 to 5 times faster than manual processes while maintaining accuracy.

In pilot deployments across more than 100 companies in 19 countries, including ANDRITZ Metals, CASMT, and Prism Systems, the system has been used in automation engineering workflows. Prism Systems used it to generate structured control language (SCL) code, reducing execution time, while CASMT applied it for device configuration, code generation, and HMI visualisation, reporting faster delivery timelines and fewer specialist hand-offs.

The Eigen Engineering Agent is part of Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio and is accessible digitally through TIA Portal, which has over 600,000 users.

The launch follows Siemens’ €1 billion investment in industrial AI. The company has more than 1,500 AI specialists and over 2,000 AI-related patent families supporting its development efforts.
