In a reported cyber incident over the weekend, the US website of premium watchmaker Seiko was allegedly compromised, with attackers briefly defacing a section of the site and claiming access to customer data.
According to a cybersecurity report, visitors to the “Press Lounge” page were shown a defaced screen titled “HACKED” instead of the usual content. The message claimed that Seiko’s Shopify system had been breached and customer information stolen. The altered page was later removed, and the website section was restored.
The hackers alleged in their message: “This is an urgent security notification regarding your Shopify store. Your customer database has been compromised.” They further stated: “We have successfully breached your Shopify store’s security systems and downloaded the entire customer database.”
The attackers claimed that the stolen data could include customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, order histories, shipping details, and account-related information.
The message also included a ransom-related warning, stating that the data would be made public if the company did not respond. It alleged that Seiko USA had been given 72 hours to initiate contact and begin negotiations. The hackers also instructed the company to locate a specific customer account within its Shopify system, where a contact email had reportedly been added for communication.
At the time of reporting, Seiko USA has not issued any official confirmation regarding a data breach or responded publicly to the claims. The identity of the attackers also remains unknown.
The defaced content has since been taken down, and the affected section of the website appears to be functioning normally again. However, the incident has raised fresh concerns over potential vulnerabilities in third-party e-commerce platforms and brand websites.
Cybersecurity experts often warn that such defacement incidents, whether confirmed or unverified, highlight the growing risks faced by consumer data stored on cloud-based retail systems.
