Samsung’s partnership with Microsoft OneDrive for storing photos and videos through Samsung Gallery is coming to an end, and the company appears to have found its next cloud storage partner in Google.
A new version of Samsung’s Gallery Cloud Sync service has reportedly appeared on the Galaxy Store. Its description says the service will back up photos and videos to Google Cloud, suggesting that Samsung is preparing to shift its cloud-sync functionality away from Microsoft.
For users, the change may have little impact on the basic experience. Once the new system becomes active, photos and videos could simply be uploaded to Google’s cloud storage instead of OneDrive.
The OneDrive sync option has already started disappearing from Samsung Gallery for some users, ahead of the September 30 end date. After the partnership ends, photos stored on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure will no longer be accessible directly through Samsung Gallery.
However, users will still be able to access their existing files through the OneDrive app. They can also continue backing up new images to OneDrive by using the Microsoft app directly.
Meanwhile, Google’s cloud-sync option is already appearing inside Samsung Gallery for some users, although the feature does not appear to be fully active yet.
Google’s support documentation indicates that photos uploaded from Samsung Gallery to Google’s cloud storage will also become available in Google Photos. This could give users another way to access and manage their images across Google’s ecosystem.
Samsung has not officially announced the new Google partnership yet. One important question is whether users will be given an easy way to transfer their existing OneDrive photos to Google’s cloud storage while continuing to access them through Samsung Gallery.
For now, Samsung Galaxy users who rely on Gallery and OneDrive for photo backups may need to prepare for the upcoming change.
