Samsung is reportedly moving closer to bringing its long-rumoured rollable smartphone to the market. A new report suggests the company has made significant progress in developing the device after years of showcasing rollable display concepts at technology events.
According to the report, Samsung Display is accelerating work on its rollable display technology, with the company’s first commercial rollable smartphone expected to launch in the first half of 2028. The device is currently being positioned as Samsung’s next major display innovation.
The smartphone is expected to expand into a 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and an estimated 440ppi pixel density. While the official branding has not been confirmed, the device is currently rumoured to launch as the Galaxy Z Slide. The report also claims Samsung is planning a second rollable smartphone that could arrive in 2030.
The development comes as competition in the foldable smartphone segment continues to grow. According to market research data cited in the report, Samsung’s share of the foldable display panel market declined from 41.8% in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 27% in the first quarter of 2026. The company is reportedly viewing rollable devices as a way to strengthen its position in the premium smartphone market.
The report notes that rollable displays present unique engineering challenges. The screen and its internal mechanism must withstand repeated expansion and retraction while maintaining a slim smartphone design.
Samsung has previously demonstrated similar technologies through concepts such as Flex Hybrid at CES 2023 and the Rollable Flex prototype at SID Display Week 2023. The Rollable Flex prototype expanded from 49mm to more than 254mm, showcasing the company’s progress in variable-size display technology.
Samsung has not officially confirmed plans for a commercial rollable smartphone. If the report is accurate, the device could debut in 2028, offering a display that expands from a standard smartphone size into a tablet-like screen for multitasking and media consumption.
