Qualcomm is expanding its presence in the telecommunications infrastructure market after signing a multi-year agreement with SpaceX to supply equipment and software for Starlink Mobile’s planned nationwide terrestrial 5G network in the US. The partnership marks a significant step in SpaceX’s efforts to establish itself as a wireless carrier and compete with established telecom operators.

Under the agreement, Qualcomm will provide radio equipment, baseband units and software for the network. The equipment is expected to be deployed across tens of thousands of macro cell sites across the US, starting in 2027.

While the financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed, Qualcomm described it as “this is our biggest 5G deal yet.” The partnership will strengthen its position in the telecom infrastructure segment, where it will compete with companies such as Marvell, Broadcom and Intel by supplying chips used in cellular tower equipment.

Known primarily for its smartphone processors, Qualcomm has been working to diversify its business beyond mobile devices. The company already supports 5G network infrastructure in Japan and Vietnam, and the latest agreement represents a major expansion of its role in the global telecommunications sector.

SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, aims to build a nationwide wireless network in the US to compete with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Its strategy combines satellite connectivity with terrestrial network infrastructure.

However, questions remain about the feasibility of the plan, particularly given the substantial investments required to compete with the country’s 3 largest wireless carriers. Despite these challenges, SpaceX has continued to advance its expansion plans through spectrum acquisitions and discussions with cell tower companies to strengthen its terrestrial network.

Qualcomm said its equipment will provide a flexible foundation for a multi-band network that can be rolled out in stages. The initial deployment will focus on terrestrial 5G, while the network architecture will support future developments in connectivity and network intelligence.

Its radio technology is designed to improve network coverage, capacity and spectral efficiency, which measures how effectively available spectrum can carry data. Advanced beamforming technology will also help direct wireless signals towards users, allowing SpaceX to make more efficient use of its licensed spectrum.
