India’s quantum computing ambitions are gaining a manufacturing base, with Bengaluru-based QpiAI inaugurating an 8-inch quantum processing unit manufacturing facility in Jakkur. The company says the facility is the largest quantum foundry of its kind in Asia and is designed to support the development of processors with thousands of qubits.
The second phase of the facility has been completed and can fabricate flip-chip superconducting processors with up to 128 qubits. A third phase, planned for completion in 2027, is expected to enable the production of quantum processing units with up to 10,000 physical qubits.
QpiAI Founder and CEO Nagendra Nagaraja said the company will handle the complete manufacturing process at the Bengaluru facility, including lithography, etching, patterning, assembly and packaging.
“We are doing everything here,” Nagaraja said.
He said conventional semiconductor foundries cannot manufacture all the specialised components required for quantum computers, making in-house manufacturing capabilities important. “Quantum computing today is being held back because there is not enough innovation in manufacturing,” he added.
The facility will also produce peripheral chips and sensors used in quantum systems. QpiAI plans to use it for research into photonic and semiconductor qubits, while production deployments will focus on superconducting transmon and fluxonium-derived qubits.
The company has fabricated 4 processors so far: the 8-qubit QVidya, 25-qubit Indus, 64-qubit Kaveri and 9-qubit Yukti. The first 3 use transmon qubits, while Yukti uses QpiAI’s variation of fluxonium technology.
QpiAI said Yukti has shown potential in developing error-corrected logical qubits, which use multiple physical qubits and error-correction techniques to store quantum information more reliably.
The foundry includes Class 100 and Class 1,000 clean-room facilities and forms part of QpiAI’s 70,000-square-foot research and development centre. The centre also houses QPU testing and quantum-solutions development facilities, with the remaining section expected to be commissioned in 2027.
QpiAI has invested $20–25 million in the facility and plans to invest another $10–15 million. Around 20% of its required inputs are currently imported, with the company planning to localise more of its supply chain as it expands.
The foundry will support QpiAI’s planned Quantum Supremacy Centres (QSCs), which will combine error-corrected quantum processors with AI chip clusters.
“Manufacturing facilities for QPUs are essential,” Nagaraja said, adding that the company plans to build 10,000-physical-qubit processors and eventually connect multiple processors to create larger systems.
QpiAI plans its first QSC on a 10-acre site with around 300,000 square feet of built-up space. It also plans 4 centres outside India, although their locations, investment requirements and timelines have not been disclosed.
Nagaraja described the QSCs as “quantum AI factories” aimed at developing commercial applications that can demonstrate quantum advantage. The company initially plans to target the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the US for exports.
At the inauguration, HCL Co-founder Ajai Chowdhry said QpiAI’s combination of AI and quantum computing could support future computing infrastructure.
“Where quantum is today is where AI was five years ago,” Chowdhry said. He added that QpiAI was the first company backed through the startup programme of the National Quantum Mission, whose Mission Governing Board he chairs.
Founded in 2019, QpiAI develops quantum processors, control systems, software platforms and quantum-AI applications. It has offices in Finland, the US and Singapore.
The company raised $32 million in a Series A round in 2025 led by Avataar Ventures and the National Quantum Mission. It was one of 8 startups selected for support under the mission.
