India is taking another step towards strengthening its electronics supply chain, with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) approving 31 new manufacturing projects across 10 states. The projects involve a projected investment of ₹6,844 crore and are expected to create 9,588 direct jobs.

The approvals come under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), taking the total number of approved projects under the scheme to 106. The latest projects cover 20 products, including filters, coils, speakers, optical transceivers and battery materials.

Several projects also mark India’s first domestic manufacturing proposals for critical components such as filters, coils, speakers, acetylene black and electrolyte additives.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said ECMS is creating a ‘Swadeshi’ electronics value chain and moving India beyond assembly towards domestic production of components and raw materials.

Together, the 31 projects entail ₹7,877 crore in investment, including additional approved investments, and are expected to generate ₹82,243 crore in production. Wipro Global Engineering and Electronic Materials has separately received approval for an additional ₹1,033 crore investment to manufacture copper-clad laminate.

The approved projects cover 3 sub-assemblies, 10 components and 6 supply chain products, along with capital goods and their parts. Sub-assembly projects include camera modules, display modules and optical transceiver SFPs, with Minda Instrument, TXB Optics and SkyQuad Electronics & Appliances among the companies receiving approvals.

Component projects include connectors, relays, transducers, filters, capacitors, coils, antennas, speakers, microphones, enclosures and metal shielding covers. Supply chain projects cover anode material, rare earth permanent magnets, acetylene black, electrolyte additives, metallised films and hermetic terminals.

The projects span Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Of the 106 approved projects, 38 have already started manufacturing, while 16 have reached advanced construction or machinery installation stages.

Across all 106 projects, approved investment stands at ₹69,548 crore. They are expected to generate ₹5.34 lakh crore in production and 74,628 direct jobs.

Production has already exceeded domestic demand in some categories, reaching about 110% for anode material, 350% for optical transceiver SFPs and 200% for relays.
