North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) is testing an artificial intelligence tool designed to help paramedics document patient interactions and potentially reduce their administrative workload.

The ambulance service is conducting an 8-week trial to assess technology that records, transcribes and summarises conversations between patients and medical staff. A total of 38 participants, including paramedics and operational staff, are taking part in the study.

The AI tool uses the built-in microphones on iPads carried by ambulance staff to capture conversations during real-world patient interactions. According to NEAS, the technology is being tested to understand how it could support frontline services.

All notes generated through the AI-powered ambient voice technology will be reviewed and edited by a clinician before being added to a patient’s medical record. This process is intended to ensure that the documentation meets the required standards.

The organisation hopes the technology could improve the consistency and accuracy of patient records while helping staff manage their workload more efficiently.

Georgina Campbell, NEAS’s digital clinical lead, said the trial would help the organisation assess how emerging technology could be adopted responsibly.

“This trial will help us understand how emerging technology can be used safely and effectively, while maintaining the high standards of care and record keeping that our patients and communities expect,” Campbell said.

NEAS will evaluate the results before deciding whether to continue using the technology. A spokesperson said a decision on its future would be made after the trial concludes in November.
