Panchkula police have reported a major increase in action against cybercrime this year, with 205 accused arrested so far and nearly Rs 8 crore frozen in fraud cases.
The figures were discussed during a review meeting chaired by Commissioner of Police Pankaj Nain at Police Lines on Thursday. The meeting covered cybercrime, economic offences, crime unit performance, CCTV surveillance and ground-level policing. Gazetted officers, SHOs, police post in-charges and branch heads attended the meeting.
Police have registered 103 cybercrime cases this year and arrested 205 accused, nearly double the number of arrests made last year. Officers were also told to strengthen public awareness programmes focused on preventing cyber fraud.
Police have frozen Rs 7,94,19,086 in cyber fraud cases. Of this, Rs 4,61,42,258 has already been returned to complainants. The remaining amount will be disbursed after the required legal formalities are completed.
The police have also registered 50 economic offence cases and arrested 79 accused this year. The CP directed officers to ensure effective investigations and faster disposal of pending cases.
In September, crime teams solved 27 cases involving theft, snatching, vehicle theft, Arms Act violations and burglary. They recovered property worth more than Rs 1.25 crore, including 18 stolen two-wheelers, 2 cars, narcotics, illicit liquor, 4 country-made pistols, 1 pistol and 8 live cartridges.
Nain also directed officers to prioritise crimes against women and expand CCTV coverage across police station jurisdictions. Teams were told to maintain regular contact with senior citizens and provide assistance instead of limiting their role to verification.
The Abhedya app, designed to counter gun culture, extortion and digital arrest, has reached 1,230 people through awareness campaigns and has been downloaded by 215 users.
