OpenAI may be preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a portable AI-powered smart speaker instead of the previously rumoured AI headset. According to a report, the company’s first hardware device could be a screen-free home companion designed to deliver more natural and personalised AI interactions.
According to a Bloomberg report, OpenAI is developing what it internally describes as a new type of computer built specifically for the AI era. Rather than functioning like a traditional voice assistant, the device is expected to serve as a human-like AI companion and act as a physical extension of ChatGPT.
The reported device is expected to run on GPT-Live, an advanced version of ChatGPT’s Voice Mode that can listen and speak simultaneously, process information in real time, and respond more naturally during conversations.
Beyond answering questions, the AI device is expected to control compatible smart home devices, play music, respond to messages, and provide access to ChatGPT’s broader capabilities. The report also suggests the device will learn from user interactions over time, enabling it to deliver a more personalised experience.
One of its key features is expected to be subtle mechanical movements that create a more lifelike presence during conversations. According to the report, OpenAI believes this could differentiate the product from existing smart speakers, including Apple’s HomePod.
Unlike conventional smart speakers that remain fixed in one location, the device is expected to include a rechargeable battery, allowing users to carry it between rooms. It could assist while cooking, provide information during household tasks, and later be used in the living room or bedroom for entertainment.
The report also states that the device may include a built-in camera and additional sensors to provide greater contextual awareness and improve user interactions.
The latest report differs from earlier rumours, which suggested OpenAI was developing an AI headset or an AI-powered pen as its first consumer hardware product. If the report is accurate, the company’s first AI device could instead be a home-focused smart speaker designed to bring ChatGPT into everyday living spaces.
OpenAI has not officially confirmed the reported device or its specifications.
