A major upgrade is arriving for ChatGPT Voice as OpenAI introduces GPT Live, a new voice system designed to deliver smoother, faster, and more natural conversations. The update is being rolled out globally across iOS, Android, web, and CarPlay, bringing enhanced voice interactions to users across different subscription plans.
The new system introduces GPT Live 1 and GPT Live 1 mini, replacing the previous voice experience. OpenAI said the models are designed to support richer conversations, smarter responses, visual content, and improved handling of longer interactions.
One of the biggest changes is the adoption of a full-duplex architecture, which allows ChatGPT to listen and respond at the same time. Instead of waiting for users to finish speaking, the system continuously processes audio and decides whether to reply, pause, continue listening, or interrupt when appropriate. This also improves features such as live translation.
OpenAI said GPT Live separates voice interaction from advanced processing tasks. When requests require web searches, deeper reasoning, or agent-based actions, the voice model can hand those tasks to another AI model while continuing the conversation. The first release uses GPT 5.5 as its reasoning model, with future upgrades planned over time.
The company noted that GPT Live replaces older speech-to-text and turn-based voice systems that required users to stop speaking before receiving a response. Human evaluations showed improvements in conversation quality, turn-taking, interruptions, naturalness, and overall user preference.
Users can now interrupt the assistant, ask it to slow down, or request that it remain silent until needed. The system can also acknowledge that it is listening and has received updates to all 9 built-in ChatGPT voices.
GPT Live also supports search, memory, image handling, file uploads, and visual cards for topics such as weather, stocks, and sports. Users can choose between Instant, Medium, and High reasoning modes based on their preferred balance of speed and reasoning depth.
OpenAI said the new system includes additional voice-specific safety protections, age-appropriate behaviour for teenagers, parental controls, and safeguards that prevent the AI from imitating real people’s voices.
