Former Uber executive to lead consumer growth, enterprise partnerships and policy engagement as OpenAI strengthens its India presence

OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, signalling a deeper commitment to one of the company’s fastest-growing international markets. Singh, who previously led Uber’s India and South Asia operations, is expected to assume the role in September.

As Managing Director, Singh will oversee OpenAI’s operations across India, with responsibilities spanning consumer adoption, enterprise engagement, strategic partnerships and collaboration with policymakers. His appointment marks an important milestone as the artificial intelligence company expands its leadership presence in the country.

India has emerged as a key market for OpenAI, driven by rapid adoption of generative AI across businesses, educational institutions and the developer community. The company has been increasing its engagement with enterprises and public sector organisations while supporting the broader AI ecosystem.

Singh brings more than a decade of leadership experience in scaling technology businesses. During his tenure at Uber, he played a central role in expanding the company’s mobility services across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, while navigating a dynamic regulatory and business environment.

Industry observers view the appointment as a strategic move that positions OpenAI to strengthen its local partnerships and better serve Indian users and organisations. Establishing dedicated leadership in India is also expected to help the company respond more effectively to the country’s rapidly evolving AI landscape and growing demand for advanced AI solutions.

The announcement comes as global technology companies continue to invest in India’s expanding digital economy, recognising the country as a major hub for innovation, talent and AI adoption. With a dedicated India head now in place, OpenAI is expected to deepen its collaborations with businesses, developers and government stakeholders while supporting responsible AI development across the region.
