A suspected SIM card network linked to cybercrime in Jamtara, Jharkhand, has been uncovered in Odisha with the arrest of 3 people. Police also seized 120 sealed SIM cards and several documents during the operation.
The racket was detected during an investigation by the Sambalpur Cyber Police Station into a case registered on September 22. Police said the accused allegedly used customers’ identity documents and other papers to generate multiple SIM cards against a single number.
After giving 1 SIM card to the customer, the accused allegedly kept the additional cards and sold them to other people. Investigators found that some SIM cards generated through the network were allegedly used in cybercrimes in Jamtara.
Police also found that money earned from the sale of these additional SIM cards was shared among members of the network.
The seizure included 4 mobile phones, 4 active SIM cards and 120 sealed SIM cards. Police also recovered 3 bank passbooks, 1 cheque book, 1 Aadhaar card, 1 PhonePe QR scanner, 4 affidavits and 1 rent agreement, along with other documents.
The investigation is continuing to determine the wider scope of the operation. Police are examining how many cards were generated through the racket, who received them, the financial transactions involved and the alleged links with Jamtara.
