Nyaya Setu launched as AI legal assistant with multilingual support at DISHA programme

In a step toward improving access to legal information, Nyaya Setu, an AI-powered legal assistant, was unveiled at the DISHA programme held at Vigyan Bhawan. The launch was led by Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with its mascot “Dishika.”

Developed end-to-end by the Digital India BHASHINI Division, the platform is voice-first, multimodal, and multilingual. It uses BHASHINI’s speech recognition, multilingual NLP, and conversational AI to help citizens understand legal rights, procedures, and next steps in multiple Indian languages.

Nyaya Setu provides responses aligned with legal guardrails and frameworks such as BNS. It is positioned as a turnkey example of India’s language AI stack, aiming to remove language and procedural barriers in accessing justice. The mascot “Dishika” acts as a friendly digital guide, especially for first-time users of the legal system.

During the event, BHASHINI’s Shrutlekh system demonstrated real-time transcription and multilingual translation of the Vice-President’s address. This highlighted BHASHINI’s growing role as national language infrastructure, already supporting hundreds of government websites and processing millions of AI inferences daily.

The launch reflects ongoing efforts to use AI and language technologies to make legal services more accessible and user-friendly across the country.
