Nvidia has donated one of its most advanced AI supercomputers to the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Foundation, marking the first direct deployment of the company’s latest AI servers within the U.S. military.

The Naval Postgraduate School, operated by the U.S. Navy, offers master’s and doctoral programs in fields such as computer science and aerospace engineering, with a strong focus on defense and military applications.

The donated system is powered by Nvidia’s GB300 Grace Blackwell servers, the company’s latest AI computing platform. While Nvidia and the NPS did not disclose the size of the system, they confirmed it has been installed at the NPS campus in Monterey, California, where U.S. Pacific Command Commander Adm. Samuel J. Paparo and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang were scheduled to announce the deployment.

Although Nvidia’s Blackwell chips are already planned for use in U.S. Department of Energy supercomputers, this is the 1st direct use of the company’s most advanced AI servers by the U.S. military.

“AI will be a backbone of America’s defense,” Huang said in a statement.

The U.S. and China continue to compete in deploying AI for military applications, including target identification, battlefield analysis, and drone operations.

“As we modernize our technology, we must also modernize how we educate our leaders,” Adm. Paparo said. “Access to advanced computing capability means NPS students and faculty understand the opportunities and responsibilities that come with these technologies.”

According to Trenton Hancock, Chief Information Officer at NPS, the new system will initially require careful resource management. He added, “But what this system really gives us is the ability to explore more complex, real-world problems, especially those that mirror the challenges our operational fleet faces every day.”

The new AI supercomputer is expected to help researchers, students, and military leaders tackle complex operational challenges faster than traditional computer simulation methods.
