Nvidia pledges $250 million to advance AI safety research in the UK

The United Kingdom is strengthening its efforts to become a global leader in AI safety and governance, with Nvidia pledging $250 million worth of computing resources over 5 years to support research into safer artificial intelligence systems.

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang announced on Wednesday that the UK would receive $50 million in accelerated computing resources annually. The funding will support agentic AI safety testing and help researchers develop stronger safeguards for increasingly powerful AI systems.

“AI capability and safety must advance together,” Huang said.

“This is how the UK turns research leadership into real-world solutions — and scientific progress into a future that benefits everyone.”

Although the UK is not home to major AI developers, it aims to play a leading role in evaluating AI systems and managing their risks. Its AI Security Institute is among the world’s first government-backed bodies established to assess the technology.

AI safety has faced greater scrutiny after developers, including Anthropic and OpenAI, disclosed cases of unwanted or rogue behaviour by AI agents. Some industry figures have also warned that advanced AI could pose an existential threat to humanity.

British AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said Nvidia’s contribution would help ensure future AI is “safe, secure and that serves people’s best interests”.

The investment follows comments by Microsoft President Brad Smith, who said in an interview on Monday that the UK was well-positioned to lead efforts to develop AI safety guidelines.

The funding will connect research initiatives across the country. These include BOLD, led by the University of Oxford, which is developing methods to help AI systems learn, adapt and work alongside people. It will also support robotics safety research at Imperial College and programmes at University College London.
