Aiming to make the update experience smoother, Microsoft has introduced several changes to how updates are managed on Windows devices. The move focuses on reducing unexpected interruptions and giving users greater flexibility.

Based on feedback from thousands of users, the company has added new options that allow people to better control when and how updates are installed. One of the key changes is during device setup, where users can now skip and go directly to the desktop, choosing to install them later. However, skipping means missing out on the latest features and security fixes until they are installed.

The update pause feature has also been expanded. Users can now pause for up to 35 days using a calendar-based system. This pause can be extended multiple times, with no limit on how often it can be reset, making it easier to delay during busy periods.

Another important change is in the Power menu. Restart and shutdown options are now separate from update-related actions. This allows users to turn off or restart their device without being forced to install at that moment, while still keeping update options available.

Microsoft has also improved transparency by providing clearer details about updates. For example, driver updates will now be categorised into areas like audio, display, or battery, helping users understand what is being installed.

To reduce frequent disruptions, the company is aligning different types of updates. Driver, .NET, and firmware updates will now be combined with the regular monthly update cycle. This is expected to reduce the number of system restarts for most users.

These will appear under a single “Available updates” section in settings, making it easier to view and manage all pending in one place. While early testers may still receive updates more frequently, most users will benefit from fewer interruptions and a more organised update process.
