In an effort to improve online safety, Meta is testing a new artificial intelligence system designed to identify users under 13 on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
The system analyses photos, videos, posts and comments to find signals that may indicate a user’s age. If the AI detects that an account likely belongs to someone under 13, the account is deactivated until the user can verify their age.
Instead of relying on facial recognition, the system examines visual indicators such as height or bone structure in images. It also reviews text in bios, captions and posts to identify language that may suggest a user is underage.
The feature is currently being tested in the United States. Meta plans to expand its rollout gradually as part of its broader efforts to enhance safety for younger users across its platforms.
