Meta is reportedly testing a new generation of AI-powered smart glasses capable of continuously analysing a user’s surroundings, marking a significant step toward more context-aware wearable technology. The experimental feature, internally described as “super sensing,” is designed to give Meta AI a deeper understanding of what users see and hear throughout the day.

Unlike today’s smart glasses, which rely on voice commands or manual activation, the prototype is said to passively capture visual and audio information at regular intervals. This enables the AI assistant to answer contextual questions, such as where an object was last seen, what happened during a meeting or whether a user completed a specific task.

The technology is aimed at turning AI into a real-time personal assistant with an improved memory of daily activities. By combining computer vision, speech recognition and contextual AI, Meta hopes to make wearable devices more useful for everyday productivity rather than simply serving as cameras or audio accessories.

However, the development has reignited concerns around digital privacy. Privacy advocates argue that continuous environmental monitoring could inadvertently capture conversations and activities involving people who have not consented to being recorded. Questions have also been raised about how the collected information is processed, stored and protected.

The reported prototype reflects the growing competition among technology companies to build AI-first wearables that can deliver proactive, personalised assistance. As generative AI becomes more deeply integrated into consumer devices, companies are increasingly exploring hardware capable of understanding the real world in real time.

Meta has not announced plans for a commercial launch, and the feature remains in the testing phase. Even so, the project highlights the industry’s broader ambition to move beyond chatbot-style AI towards intelligent assistants that remain continuously aware of a user’s environment.
