Recent leaks have stirred up excitement in the XR world, revealing that Samsung, Apple, and Meta are all working on incorporating OLED displays into their upcoming VR headsets. While the plans from Samsung and Apple are certainly intriguing, Meta may have the edge due to one key factor: cost.
Let’s start with Samsung, as it’s the only one of the three whose headset has been officially confirmed. According to a report by The Elec (a South Korean news outlet, summarized by @Jukanlosreve), Samsung’s upcoming consumer version of the Project Moohan headset – developed in collaboration with Google – will feature a 1.3-inch OLED display with an impressive pixel density of 3,800 PPI (pixels per inch).
What’s particularly interesting is that the OLED on Silicon (OLEDoS) display, which is a high-density, tiny OLED panel built on silicon, will actually be sourced from Sony rather than Samsung Display. This display’s pixel density is even higher than the 3,386 PPI display in Apple’s Vision Pro. This suggests that Samsung plans to position its Moohan headset as a premium alternative to the Apple Vision Pro, though whether it will be priced competitively remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, Apple’s Vision Pro also utilizes OLED displays but focuses on premium performance and features. However, what sets Meta apart is their plan to keep the cost lower, making it more accessible to a wider audience. If Meta can successfully implement this strategy, their OLED-equipped headset could be a game-changer in the XR space, offering top-tier tech at a more affordable price point.
With all three tech giants focusing on OLED for their next VR headsets, the competition is heating up, but Meta’s approach to cost could make it the most attractive option for consumers.
