Meta has introduced paid subscription services for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp as the company looks to expand beyond its traditional advertising-based business model. The move marks a major shift for the social media giant as it increases investments in artificial intelligence and premium digital services.
The new plans, named Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus and WhatsApp Plus, are being launched globally. Meta also confirmed that additional subscription options focused on creators, businesses and AI tools are currently under development.
According to reports, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will be priced at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus will cost $2.99 per month.
The premium plans will unlock extra features for users across the platforms. Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are expected to offer advanced analytics, profile customization, wider audience reach, story insights and enhanced interaction tools. Some features include story rewatch statistics, custom fonts, custom app icons and audience management options.
WhatsApp Plus will focus more on personalization features such as premium stickers, custom themes and unique ringtone options.
Meta head of product Naomi Gleit announced the rollout through a video shared on Instagram and said more subscription-based services are expected in the future.
The company is also testing AI-focused subscription plans under the “Meta One” branding. These plans are expected to provide users with access to additional AI-powered tools and advanced media generation features.
The launch comes as Meta continues to face growing investor attention over its rising AI spending. The company has projected capital expenditure between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, mainly for AI infrastructure, chips and data centres.
Following the announcement, Meta’s stock reportedly rose nearly 3%.
Meta clarified that the paid plans will not replace the free versions of its platforms. Core services across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp will continue to remain free for users globally.
