Meta secures space-based solar power deal to meet future data center energy needs

In a move focused on future energy solutions, Meta Platforms has signed an agreement with Overview Energy to use space-based solar power for its data centers by the end of this decade.

The technology aims to collect solar energy in space and transmit it to Earth for continuous power generation. This approach is designed to provide round-the-clock electricity, addressing growing energy demands from AI and data centers.

The first orbital demonstration of Overview Energy’s system is expected in 2028, with commercial power delivery planned for 2030. Under the agreement, Meta will get early access to up to 1 gigawatt of capacity from this system. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Meta has been actively securing long-term energy sources to support rising infrastructure needs. The company is also investing in alternative energy, including nuclear power, as it works to reduce its carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels.

Overview Energy’s technology works by capturing solar energy in space and converting it into near-infrared light. This energy is then transmitted to large solar farms on Earth, where it is converted back into electricity. The company aims to overcome challenges linked to high-power lasers or microwave-based transmission methods.

The startup has already demonstrated power transmission from an aircraft. It plans to deploy 1,000 satellites by 2030, each capable of delivering energy from space for over a decade. This satellite network is expected to cover nearly one-third of the planet and support solar farms by providing electricity during evening and night hours.
