In a move focused on improving online safety for young users, Meta has introduced a new feature that allows parents to monitor the topics their teens have discussed with Meta AI over the past 7 days. The update is available across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram.
The feature adds an “Insights” tab within the supervision hub. This section lets parents view conversation topics such as “School,” “Entertainment,” “Lifestyle,” “Travel,” “Writing,” and “Health and Wellbeing.” By selecting a topic, parents can explore related subcategories to better understand their child’s interests and activity.
Meta AI characters are interactive AI personas designed to simulate real-life roles, such as a chef, or even mimic well-known personalities like Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton. However, in January, the company suspended access to these characters for teens across all its platforms globally.
Meta has also introduced suggested conversation starters for parents. These are meant to encourage open and non-judgmental discussions about teens’ experiences with AI.
In addition, the company announced the formation of an AI Wellbeing Expert Council. This group will help guide the development of AI tools designed for younger users.
The update comes after a court in New Mexico held Meta liable for failing to protect minors on its platforms. This marked the first time the company has been found legally responsible for risks related to child safety.
