Jamshedpur police uncover alleged SIM card supply network linked to cybercrime

A suspected SIM card racket in Jamshedpur has come under police scrutiny after investigators found that multiple connections were allegedly obtained using customers’ KYC documents and diverted to cybercriminals.

Police arrested 3 people, including 2 teenagers, for allegedly issuing SIM cards in violation of government rules. The accused have been identified as Raunak Kumar (19), Sunny Kumar Sao (19) and Prakash Kumar (33).

Senior Superintendent of Police (East Singhbhum) Ehteshan Waquarib said the arrests followed information that some SIM card point-of-sale agents were linked to cybercriminals in the region and were supplying them with mobile connections.

How the SIM card racket allegedly operated

Superintendent of Police (City) Lalit Meena said the accused collected KYC documents from several customers who could not read or write. They used these documents to obtain multiple SIM cards in the customers’ names but handed over only 1 SIM card to each customer.

The remaining SIM cards were allegedly supplied to cybercriminals, allowing them to obtain mobile connections using other people’s identities.

Police said the 3 accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act and the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
