Marking a major shift in its human spaceflight plans, Indian Space Research Organisation is set to allow civilians to join its astronaut programme for the first time. Moving beyond its earlier focus on military test pilots, the change is expected to begin from the 4th Gaganyaan mission onward.

This development could enable individuals from STEM backgrounds to train for space missions, making India’s space ambitions more inclusive and accessible. It also reflects a broader push to diversify the talent pool involved in human spaceflight.

The upcoming batch of astronauts is expected to include 6 military pilots and 4 civilian specialists. This approach aligns with global practices, where a mix of operational expertise and specialised knowledge is used to strengthen mission outcomes.

ISRO believes that expanding the astronaut base could support more frequent human space missions in the future, with possibilities of launching missions up to 2 times a year. The move is aimed at building long-term capability and scaling India’s presence in space exploration.

However, several challenges remain. The agency still needs to establish a permanent astronaut training centre and advance critical life-support technologies required for sustained human space missions.

Despite these hurdles, the decision signals a clear step towards broader participation and stronger ambitions in India’s space journey.
