Apple’s first foldable smartphone is now available in India and global markets, giving users a closer look at its design and repair challenges. An early teardown reveals how the iPhone Duo’s matte, nano-textured protective layer reduces the visibility of the inner display crease and what happens when the layer is removed.
iPhone Duo teardown reveals display and repair details
The teardown, conducted by a mobile repair channel, examines the phone’s internal components and the challenges involved in servicing its foldable design.
When the matte protective layer is peeled away, the inner display underneath appears glossy, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. However, the screen crease becomes more visible without the layer.
Apple uses the nano-textured surface to reduce glare and make the crease less noticeable. Apple’s hardware engineering chief, Kate Bergeron, previously explained that the layer was designed to be replaceable as it wears over time. Although it can be removed, Apple advises users not to peel it off themselves. Replacing a damaged or worn cover layer costs Rs. 5,900 in India.
The teardown also shows that the iPhone Duo has a battery in each half of its body. Replacing them requires removing both the rear panel and the secondary display, making the process more complex than battery replacement on a regular iPhone.
Thin, folded ribbon cables connect components such as the selfie camera to the mainboard. These cables can be damaged during disassembly. However, several parts can be replaced individually, including both selfie cameras, the dual rear camera system and the mainboard.
The hinge and folding inner display are more difficult to replace because of their integration into the phone’s design, potentially increasing repair time and costs.
iPhone Duo repair costs in India
The inner display replacement costs Rs. 1,49,900, while the outer display repair is priced at Rs. 42,900. Battery service costs Rs. 24,900, and rear camera replacement costs Rs. 26,900. Other damage can cost up to Rs. 2,24,900, depending on the damage and applicable repair programme.
AppleCare can reduce eligible repair costs, but coverage itself is expensive. The plan costs Rs. 51,900 in India.
The iPhone Duo’s inner display is claimed to be 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but its repair costs highlight the challenges of maintaining a foldable device.
