In a move aimed at simplifying social sharing, Instagram is reportedly testing a new app called “Instants” that focuses on quick, unfiltered photo interactions. The feature is currently being tested in select regions, including Spain and Italy.
The app is designed for casual use, allowing users to capture and share photos instantly with minimal effort. With a single tap, users can take a picture and send it directly to friends. There is no option to upload images from the camera roll, and editing features are limited to adding text. This ensures that what users capture is exactly what gets shared.
Instants focuses on real-time communication. Photos can only be viewed once and remain available for up to 24 hours. This approach adds a sense of urgency and privacy to interactions, setting it apart from the more curated experience of the main Instagram platform.
Users can share these photos with mutual followers or their Close Friends list. These lists are automatically synced with the main app, removing the need for additional setup. Instagram is also testing Instants both as a standalone app and as a feature within the existing platform.
The concept is similar to apps like Snapchat and BeReal, which emphasise temporary and authentic content. This reflects a broader shift toward spontaneous sharing rather than highly edited posts.
The move comes as Instagram continues to evolve into a platform dominated by influencers, advertisements, and polished content. With Instants, the company appears to be reintroducing a more personal and low-pressure way of connecting, similar to its early days.
At the same time, the test highlights growing competition from platforms that prioritise private and real-time engagement. While features like Instagram Stories already support quick sharing, Instants aims to go further by focusing entirely on raw, moment-based interaction. The feature is still in testing, and a wider rollout will depend on user response.
