As data consumption surges, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman A.K. Lahoti has flagged indoor connectivity as a growing concern for consumers.
Speaking at the COAI Digicom Summit 2026, Lahoti said that while mobile data usage is increasing in both volume and speed, indoor network performance is struggling to keep pace. He noted that consumers frequently face weak signals inside buildings, a challenge that has become more prominent with the rollout of 5G services, especially in mid-band frequencies.
He stressed that mobile networks alone may not be sufficient to meet rising demand, particularly with the growing impact of AI-driven applications. To address this, TRAI is supporting the expansion of fixed broadband networks alongside mobile infrastructure.
Lahoti highlighted that the regulator has already made recommendations to the government to improve indoor connectivity, which have been accepted. He emphasised that these measures now need to be integrated into building design and construction practices, ensuring that developers include digital connectivity infrastructure from the planning stage.
To further improve standards, TRAI introduced regulations in October 2024 for rating buildings based on the quality of indoor digital connectivity. These ratings, applicable to residential and commercial properties, will be issued by empanelled Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies.
He added that wider adoption of this rating framework could significantly enhance indoor connectivity experiences for consumers.
On the policy front, TRAI has also recommended increasing spectrum availability for telecom operators. This includes bands such as 37–40 GHz and 600 MHz, along with existing mobile service bands. The 600 MHz spectrum, in particular, is expected to improve signal penetration inside buildings.
The remarks highlight the need for coordinated efforts between regulators, telecom operators, and real estate developers to address indoor connectivity challenges in a data-driven and AI-enabled digital ecosystem.
