In a major regulatory move for the digital entertainment sector, the Centre is expected to notify rules under the Online Gaming Act on Wednesday (April 22) and establish a dedicated regulatory body to oversee the industry, according to official sources.
The framework is based on the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, passed in October 2025. Along with the notification, the government is likely to operationalise the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI), which will be responsible for compliance monitoring and enforcement across the sector.
Under the proposed structure, online gaming will be divided into three categories. E-sports and online social games will be promoted and supported through policy measures. However, real-money gaming is expected to face a complete ban under the new rules.
Platforms offering games without monetary stakes will not be required to register under the regulatory framework. This is expected to significantly reduce compliance obligations for casual gaming companies operating in the non-monetary segment.
The proposed law also introduces strict penalties for violations. Any entity found hosting or facilitating real-money gaming may face up to 3 years of imprisonment along with a fine of up to ₹1 crore.
The regulatory overhaul is aimed at creating a clearer legal structure for India’s fast-growing online gaming industry while distinguishing between entertainment-based gaming and monetised gaming formats.
Authorities are expected to use the new framework to tighten enforcement and ensure compliance across digital platforms operating in the gaming ecosystem.
