In a significant step towards faster logistics, IIT Madras and FedEx have successfully completed drone delivery trials in Bengaluru, demonstrating the potential of aerial transport in urban environments.

The trials were conducted between Electronic City Phase II and an area near the airport as part of the SMART Centre initiative. This project focuses on testing drone operations in real urban airspace conditions.

During the trials, drones completed deliveries in just 21 minutes. In comparison, the same journey by road covers 53 km and usually takes over an hour. The drones followed a shorter aerial route of 39–42 km, significantly reducing travel time.

Both IIT Madras and FedEx highlighted that the successful trials mark an important step towards building smarter and faster delivery systems. The initiative also offers a glimpse into how emerging technologies like drones could reshape future supply chains and logistics networks.
