In a major push towards electric mobility, Haryana has made EV charging infrastructure compulsory in all new and renovated residential and commercial buildings. The revised rules came into effect on June 5, 2026, following amendments to the state’s 2017 building code.
Under the new regulations, commercial properties such as malls, hotels and office buildings with parking space for at least 10 vehicles must install 1 EV charging point for every 3 parking slots.
Residential projects, including group housing societies, cooperative housing developments and residential complexes managed by resident welfare associations, must provide 1 EV charging point for every 5 parking slots.
The updated rules also require all covered developments to be fully EV-ready. Builders must install electrical conduits across the property to support future expansion of charging infrastructure as EV adoption increases.
To encourage compliance, EV charging facilities will not be included in Floor Area Ratio (FAR) calculations. This allows developers to add charging infrastructure without affecting the usable built-up area of their projects.
The amended code also permits EV charging stations in basement and stilt parking areas, provided they meet all electrical and fire safety requirements.
Additionally, developers will be required to disclose EV charging provisions while applying for occupation certificates, ensuring compliance with the new norms before projects are approved for occupancy.
The move is expected to strengthen Haryana’s EV ecosystem by making charging infrastructure a standard feature in future residential and commercial developments.
